Child exchange leads to shooting in Florida


Around 5:59 p.m. Thursday evening, Port St. Lucie police responded to a call regarding a shooting in the 1600 block of SW Buttercup Avenue. Never miss anything: Sign up for personalized newsletters and alerts from WPBF 25 NewsOnce officers were on scene, they located the adult victim, who was fortunately uninjured from the shooting, and immediately detained the shooter, Jason Stefanik.The Port St. Lucie police said the preliminary investigation revealed that a child custody exchange occurred at the scene, and during that exchange, the adult male resident, Stefanik and the adult male visitor had a physical altercation in front of the house. Police say at some point, Stefanik retreated into his home and the male visitor retreated to his vehicle. As the male visitor was at his vehicle, Stefanik exited the home with a handgun and fired a shot at the male visitor, striking an unrelated vehicle. The male visitor was not harmed. Jason Stefanik is now charged with one count of Attempted First Degree Homicide. He was transported to the St. Lucie County Jail where he is currently housed with no bond.
