Huge Port St. Lucie location of The Pickleball Club set to open soon

PORT ST. LUCIE — A new 33,000-square-foot pickleball club will soon open in St. Lucie West, bringing more than a dozen courts and other amenities for the rapidly growing game.

The Pickleball Club at St. Lucie West will include 12 indoor courts, two covered outdoor courts, bocce ball, table tennis, corn hole, a café, a pro shop, locker room, lounge areas and events spaces.

Construction is wrapping up at 455 NW Enterprise Drive near Clover Park, home of the St. Lucie Mets, with plans for a mid-June soft opening and a late-June or early-July grand opening of the private club, Director of Membership David Velez said.

Meeting growing demand

While pickleball has become one of the fastest growing sports across the country, Velez said, demand is particularly high on the Treasure Coast. That can lead to long wait times for players, even as more and more courts are built at public parks and in residential communities.

“Where we sit right now, within 15-20 miles there’s over 100 courts,” Velez said.

Setting itself apart

That said, the amenities at The Pickleball Club go above and beyond those offered at other facilities, Velez said. In addition to the other facilities, the pickleball courts will be unique.

For one, the indoor climate-controlled setting will help mitigate the Florida heat and rain. Also, the courts themselves will be built with eight layers of acrylic, which, Velez said, will help prevent hard impacts that can be taxing on players’ joints. Indirect lighting will prevent glare and shadows for players, and members will be able to scan a barcode as they enter a court to play, linking cameras to their accounts for reviewing video later.

The club also will have a head pro, who will provide instruction and lead clinics. It will provide a summer camp for young players and host pro exhibitions as well.

“There’s nothing like it in the nation. Being a resident in this county for 27 years, I’m so excited to have this be a part of the Treasure Coast,” Velez said.

Growing across Florida

The St. Lucie West location will be the second for The Pickleball Club, after opening its first location in Sarasota last year. A third is in the works at The Villages, and six other Florida locations are…
