New York Mets fans optimistic as they take in first full workout in Port St. Lucie

PORT ST. LUCIE (CBS12) — The crack of the bat has finally made its way to Spring Training in Port St. Lucie, as position players checked into New York Mets camp on Monday morning. Pitchers and catchers have already been here for a week, so it’s time to put those pitches to the test against some of major league baseballs best.

Temperatures were on the cooler side on Monday morning, but it did not take long for the 2024 Mets players to warm up to their teammates. It’s a team who were disappointed with their 2023 season, after missing the playoffs with an historically high payroll. The players are ready for a fresh start.

Droves of Mets fans watched on as their favorite players got to work, like shortstop Francisco Lindor, along with some new faces.

“I’ve played against so many of these guys for years,” says former Marlins infielder Joey Wendle. “I’ve been in the division, so I’m just trying to get to know these guys.”

“It’s just fun to come in here and see all the new faces,” says Mets third baseman Brett Baty. “Everybody’s excitement level is way up there right now.”

The pressure is always on for a professional sports team from New York City, but after falling way short of expectations last season, this team is hoping to make amends, without getting too wound up in spring training.

“I’d say there’s less outside noise,” says Mets designated hitter DJ Stewart. “It doesn’t matter, payroll or whatever, we’re ready to compete.”

“We love our fans who are passionate and want us to win,” adds Baty. “That makes us want to win even more.”

The first spring training game is this Saturday at 1 PM when the Mets host the St. Louis Cardinals.
